Maddox Schultz recorded his second hat trick of the 2024 Telus Cup to keep the Regina Pat Canadians undefeated through three days of competition in Chilliwack, B.C.
After opening the national U18 AAA men’s hockey championship with wins over the Fraser Valley Thunderbirds and Moncton Flyers, the West regional champions improved to 3-0 on Wednesday with a 6-2 victory over the Central region representative, the Elgin Middlesex Canucks.
Schultz, who leads the tournament in scoring, opened the scoring in the first period and doubled Regina’s lead with his second goal midway through the second. The Pat Canadians extended their advantage to 3-0 with a power-play goal from Jonah Sivertson, assisted by Schultz and Eli Johnson.
Sivertson notched his second goal to make it 4-0 before Reid Bechard added another just 29 seconds later, pushing the lead to 5-0.
The Canucks responded with goals from Josh Myatt and Lucas Can Steensel, but Schultz sealed the game — and his second hat trick of the tournament — with a third goal late in the third period.
Goaltender Adam Muntain made 30 saves to earn his first win of the tournament.
Schultz (three goals, one assist) and Johnson (four assists) led the offensive charge for Regina with four points each. Sivertson added three points with two goals and an assist, helping the Pat Canadians maintain their perfect record while Elgin Middlesex fell to 1-2.
Regina will face the Pacific champion Okanagan Rockets on Thursday at 12 p.m., followed by a Friday matchup at noon against Quebec’s Chevaliers de Lévis — the tournament’s top-ranked team — to conclude round-robin play.
The top four teams from the six-team event will move on to Saturday’s semifinals, scheduled for 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. The winners will advance to the gold medal game on Sunday at 4 p.m., with the bronze medal game taking place earlier that day at 12 p.m.
This marks Regina’s first Telus Cup appearance since 2017 when they placed fourth. The Pat Canadians are four-time national champions, having won the title in 1983, 1988, 1994, and 1999.
